The rule, in order 1. A language you chose explicitly — for example, the language button on a held answer — always wins. 2. Otherwise, the language your question is written in, when it can be read with confidence. 3. For short conversational turns, your language is mirrored. 4. Otherwise, the interface language you chose at the gate.
Why one foreign word does not switch the language A single accented letter, a symbol such as α or π, a quoted fragment, a web address or a code block is not enough to change the answer language. Several independent signals are needed before a question is treated as written in another language.
Instructions inside the question "Answer in French" written inside a question is a request, not an override. A language you selected explicitly in the interface takes precedence over it.
No language is privileged The house is built to answer whoever is asking, in the language they asked in. The interface speaks eleven languages; the answers follow you.
