Every answer belongs to one of four kinds The house decides, before answering, what kind of answer your question needs. The kind is shown on the answer.

| Kind | What it means | What you see |
| --- | --- | --- |
| From memory | The question can be answered from the model's own knowledge and no claim in it needs a source. | A "from memory" label; no source list. |
| Researched | At least one claim needs evidence. Sources are opened and an independent check reads the draft against them. | A source list and the check's result. |
| From your document | You attached a document and the answer must come from it. | A note that the answer is confined to the attached record. |
| Long-form | A deliverable long enough to run as a job — reports, structured documents. | Progress in the Job tab, then the finished document. |

What makes a question "researched" A question is researched when it asks for a measured value or its uncertainty, a current fact, a quotation or citation, a comparison of studies, or when it touches a high-risk field (medical, legal, financial). Researched answers in high-risk fields need at least two independent sources before delivery.

When it goes wrong If a question that clearly needs sources comes back "from memory", that is a defect, not a judgement. Tell us through Reporting a problem and include the exact wording.
